On your road to personal evolution, it is important for you to learn how to manage stress so that you can achieve optimal levels of life satisfaction and health. Part of this process is learning to identify what causes you stress. How different people handle situations varies, and what is stressful for one person may not be for another. Stress may be caused by happy events and unhappy ones. With stress management, you can help to keep bad feelings in check so that you can experience a happier and more fulfilling life.

What is Stress?

When you experience change, your body may react to it by releasing adrenaline. In turn, your blood pressure, heart rate and breathing all increase, which helps you to deal with the situation. Stress can become a problem when it is ongoing, however. It can lead to chronic high blood pressure and cause health problems. Some stress is healthy, but it is important to learn how to effectively manage the stress that you experience so that it doesn’t become a chronic issue.

Common Causes Of Stress

There are many common causes of stress, and what a person may consider stressful will vary.

Some common causes of stress include the following:

Relationship Issues

Getting married

Having children

Buying a car or home

No matter what situation you may find stressful, identifying what stressors you have is an important first step to learning to manage your stress.

The symptoms of chronic stress also vary from person to person. You may experience emotional, cognitive, physical or behavioral symptoms. Some of the physical symptoms may include high blood pressure, increased heart rate, insomnia, headaches, low energy levels, nervousness and lack of sexual interest. Emotional responses to stress might include feeling overwhelmed or agitated, avoiding others, developing a low self-esteem, feeling depressed or having trouble relaxing.

People who are stressed may also have cognitive symptoms, including difficulty concentrating, feeling pessimistic, worrying, having trouble focusing and others. Finally, the behavioral symptoms of stress may include appetite changes, substance abuse, procrastination and nail-biting.

When Should You Seek Help For Stress?

It is important for you to seek help for your stress when you are feeling overwhelmed. Recognizing that your symptoms are likely caused by stress may help. Since some symptoms of stress are also symptoms of other potential health problems, it is important for you to seek help if you are experiencing the stress symptoms that were previously listed. You do not need to go through life feeling overwhelmed and bad about life, and stress management help is available to you.

Stress Management Techniques

There are several stress management techniques that you can try to help you when you are feeling overwhelmed. You can take slow, deep breaths.
